A Tale of Two Realities

There are two primary forms of reality: objective reality and perceived reality.

Humans, as far as we know, are the only life forms impacted by perceived reality.

A computer is an objective reality. The thoughts we express on it are perceived reality. Culture, economics, corporations and governments are perceived realities. We codify ideas about them into laws, which then impact objective reality.

John Perkins offers the following personal example:

Some years ago I joined the Peace Corps. I’d grown up in a prissy New England prep school where my dad taught French. The PC sent me to live with hunters and gatherers in the Amazon rainforest. I moved from an often snow-bound New Hampshire house to an open-air thatched-roof hut in the steamy rainforest.

Early one morning I got up with the family I was staying with and turned my transistor radio on to a station high in the Andes. Music blasted through the hut. I was shocked when the entire family dashed out and hid in the forest. After a while the man of the family came back. Carrying a spear, he crept up on the radio and knocked it over. It kept on playing. Finally, he sat down beside me and stared at it for the longest time. Then he turned to me and said, “All right, tell me the secret. How’d you get all those people into that tiny box?”

The radio was an objective reality. The people in it were his perception of reality.

Shamans describe this perceived reality as “the dream.” They say that “the world is as we dream it, as we perceive it.” To change ourselves and human societies we need to shapeshift the dream: our perceived reality. This can be personal, communal, global … or all three.

Whether your goal is changing your career, improving a relationship or transforming the world, it’s important to recognize that everything begins as a dream and that everything is made of energy. To a shapeshifter, emotions are a powerful form of energy. To recognize this is to understand that your personal power resides in how you choose to focus your energy, including how you direct your emotions.

About John Perkins
