When I first started my dance studio I had some misconceptions about what it took to create a go-to studio with full classes, dedicated teachers and the ability to have a life outside of the studio.
MYTH #1
YOU HAVE TO BE WORKING 24/7 AND ARE NEVER ALLOWED TO SWITCH OFF IF YOU WANT TO RUN A HIGHLY PROFITABLE DANCE STUDIO.

FACT. Most studio owners have set up their business because they have a passion for dance, not just for the money. But that doesn’t mean the studio should be run like a “hobby” or a “charity”. Systemizing and automating the business management side of a studio is simple if you follow a proven recipe — meaning, yes, you can make money while staying sane.
MYTH #1
YOU DON’T HAVE THE TIME TO MANAGE MORE STUDENTS BECAUSE THAT WOULD MEAN EXTRA ADMINISTRATIVE WORK.

FACT. When you have a solid business model in place you won’t be spending additional time on admin work. No matter what size your studio is, you can have the system to handle it. This alone will save you hours every single week. I can even show you how

THE TRUTH IS, I’VE BEEN WHERE YOU ARE
ABOUT Me

I started dancing at the age of 9 in jazz then moved onto tap, ballet and hip hop. Then, in an odd turn of events, I started a dance studio with a friend at the age of 16 when my old teacher sold her studio. Parents came to me asking if I could teach their children as I’d been a student teacher since I was 14. A dance friend and I decided to do it so we opened up in a small studio located at a tiny community hall which you can see here on the right with 30 students. This was my first taste at running a business. Needless to say, I had no idea what I was getting myself into.

I loved dancing and teaching so of course it made sense to me to open a dance studio. But, at that point I didn’t realize how different it would be actually running a business. In the book ‘E-Myth’ by Michael Gerber he talks about moving from being a technician, which is what you are as a dance teacher to growing and becoming the entrepreneur, which is what you need to do to become a Studio Owner with a thriving business. After making a truck load of mistakes those first few years that cost hours and hours of time, late nights, breakdowns (a few bathroom floor moments) and money, I finally saw a light at the end of the tunnel after one conversation with the person that became my first business mentor. That conversation, and the time I spent with them learning and embracing what it took to run a business, completely changed my life and business.
Fast-forward 5 years and the studio was operating 6 days a week with a few hundred students with our classes at capacity.
We had built a booming business and I was only 21.

I sold my half of the studio to my business partner and started working as an agent at the top celebrity agency in Australia managing some of the biggest names in television and media.

I had no idea how dealing with the dance mums/moms back when I had the studio would help when I was dealing with high profile celebrities! Over the five years I was at the agency I was responsible for pitching ideas and securing commercial endorsements, licensing, publishing, television, radio and speaking deals for my stable of high profile clients. During this time I also created DanceLife, Australia’s largest online community for dancers and performers. Over the four years running DanceLife it became Australia’s go to destination for all things dance. It became an online resource for dancers, a large national dance competition (so I fully understand the competition space) and a learn to dance program that was placed in schools throughout the country. I sold this business after 4 years to move on to be the touring manager for the Tony award winning musical Jersey Boys that had me travelling internationally as I managed a team of 56 people.

After my time at the agency working on Jersey Boys and running my businesses I took some time out for me. During my break I had a call from a dance studio owner who heard I was back in the country and she wanted my help. She was working a crazy amount of hours each week, never seeing her husband or children, and she felt like she couldn’t give her parents and students anymore! The worst part…the bank balance was emptying faster than she planned.

After working with her for a few months to turn the studio aroundI started getting calls from other studio owners in Australia and then the USA, Canada, New Zealand and the UK. For me, it didn’t feel like work. I was working with people I liked, in places I like, doing what I loved more than anything.

I then came to a point where I wanted to share my knowledge with more studio owners on how to design their own life and create a thriving profitable studio. That’s when I created Studio Success Formula – the business growth program for dance studio owners.
